Days after the Chinese newspaper Ming Pao fell behind in credibility ratings in a poll by Chinese University, coming third place out of 22 newspapers for trustworthiness and forced to remove their masthead slogan as the city’s most credible Chinese-language newspaper, it was announced that Ming Pao’s editor will be replaced by a Malaysian journalist.
The former chief editor, Kevin Lau Chun-to, will be transferred to the group’s new electronic books and teaching materials unit. His successor was previously chief editor of a Malaysian newspaper and living in Singapore.
Staff was shocked by the news and feared that a restructuring of the company was imminent. Will this further compromise Ming Pao’s editorial independence?
