Academics raise concern over replacement of Ming Pao editor

Following the recent replacement of the chief editor of Ming Pao’s Chinese-language newspaper, Kevin Lau Chun-to, nine local academics from Hong Kong’s 11 tertiary institutions issued a joint statement to express deep concern for Ming Pao’s decision and pressed the agency to give reasons for the change.

The RTHK reports journalism lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Yuen Chan, one of the signatories, believes the replacement of Ming Pao’s chief editor is part of a series of developments that indicate that Hong Kong’s press freedom is under threat.

Mingpao said the future Chief Editor, previously chief editor of a Malaysian newspaper and living in Singapore, would be a figure accepted by the general public, and he will uphold the freedom of speech.

Some raised concern as to whether the new editorial head should be “someone the staff trust”, and whether he should be familiar with Hong Kong’s situation.
