Woah! 193-metre-long container ship runs ashore in Pok Fu Lam

A 193-metre-long container ship, the Hansa Constitution, was blown off course on its way to Shenzhen yesterday afternoon, running aground onto the University of Hong Kong sports ground in Pok Fu Lam.

The incident was captured on film by Pok Fu Lam resident Kevin Sites, who videotaped the vessel from his home on Sha Wan Drive. He said that the vessel would probably have collided with the shore had the captain not dropped the anchor to slow the vessel down.

The Fire Services Department said that the ship was pushed ashore by strong monsoon winds after an engine failure, and had to be towed free.
