Gifted Indian teen sues police for racial discrimination

A 15-year-old teenager of Indian descent, described as “gifted” for his straight A results in his A-levels, is suing the Hong Kong government and a police officer for failing to investigate a complaint of assault he made when he was 11.

Now studying physics at a London university, Arjun Singh made the assault allegation following an altercation with a middle-aged Chinese woman in Wan Chai MTR station in 2010. According to Singh, the woman grabbed him after he bumped into her while passing her on the escalator. Both of them called the police and accused each other of assault — Singh was arrested, but the police officer took no notice of Singh’s complaint and only handled the woman’s.

The teenager was held for five and a half hours at the police station, despite CCTV footage showing the woman holding Singh, who was shorter than her at the time, forcibly enough that he could not free himself while struggling and tearing his sweater in the process. This is the first time a police officer has been sued under the Racial Discrimination Ordinance since it came into effect in 2009.

Singh continues to give evidence at the Wan Chai District Courts today.
