HK$30 million painting treated as rubbish and taken to landfill

A Chinese ink wash painting by artist Cui Ruzhou worth nearly HK$30 million mysteriously disappeared and was later suspected to have been taken to a Tuen Mun landfill after police investigation.

It went under the hammer for HK$28.75 million at the Wan Chai Grand Hyatt just two days ago during a two-day sale by Poly Auction, the second highest price among the artist’s 22 works. After the painting disappeared at the end of the auction, police scrutinised closed-circuit TV footage and saw hotel cleaners dispose of the painting as they thought it was rubbish. The auction company is now searching for the painting in the landfill.
