8-kilometre long red tide found on HK Island

Red tide spotted at Wan Chai

An eight-kilometre long red tide was found on the sea across from Sai Wan, and emitted a foul smell.

Since the red tide looks like oil pollution, some residents are concerned it is caused by an oil spill on the coast. The Fisheries Department has verified the red tide and is in the process of extracting a sample for lab analysis, and has reminded fishermen to report any sightings of dead fish populations.

Health experts also suggest swimmers to avoid waters that are affected, since red tide can cause skin allergies and irritate the eyes.
