MTR knew about delays before heavy rainstorms

As reported yesterday, MTR chiefs admitted that the high-speed railway linking Hong Kong to Shenzhen and Guangzhou will be delayed to Dec. 2015 and the West Kowloon Terminal to Aug. 2017. Additionally the construction project will now be costing HK$69.8 billion.

The MTRC claims the main reason for the delay is because of prolonged heavy rainstorm in the past two months causing damage to a tunnel boring machine. However, an internal document leaked yesterday claims that MTR Corporation knew that the Express Rail Link project would be delayed until 2017 since Jan. 2014, way before the heavy rainstorm periods.

According to The Standard, MTR has refused to comment. Albert Lai Kwong-tak, engineer and member of Professional Commons believe the MTRC used the heavy rainstorm as a cover-up while Democratic Party lawmaker said they will invoke Legco’s special powers to seek for the truth.

On the other hand, transport secretary has denied the government has played any participation in the cover-up and expresses the Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying is deeply concerned about the project and have met with MTR chiefs yesterday to discuss the issue.
