Man attempts suicide after hiding at home for nine years

Fu Pik House at Tai Wo Hau, where the 33-year-old and father lived

A 33-year-old man who spent nine years hiding at home playing video games tried to commit suicide by burning charcoal in his room, reports the Apple Daily.

The man, surnamed Cheung, originally lived with his 57-year-old father, mother, and 30-year-old sister at a housing estate. Cheung’s mother died from illness in 2010 and his sister left to work in Australia, leaving only him and his father at home. It was suspected that he tried to take his own life because of debts and grief for his mother.

Although Cheung lived with his father, he hid in his room playing video games and communicated with his father only by post-it notes stuck on his room door.

The father was lucky to be back at home in time to find Cheung locked in his room, burning charcoal, and was able to send him to the hospital. Doctor’s however, say that the Cheng’s cognitive abilities may be damaged even after recovery.
