A 79-year-old man, surnamed Leung, received a phone call from a fraudster claiming to be his grandson. The man pretending to be Leung’s grandson said he urgently needed RMB$30,000, so Leung went to a money exchange shop in Ngau Tau Kok to wire money.
The 43-year-old staff suspected the old man was being tricked and after detailed questioning her suspicions were confirmed to be right.
The elderly man called his grandson to confirm that he did not make the call to demand the money and the incident was reported to the police. According to the Apple Daily, this is the third time this month this particular money exchange shop has helped an elderly avoid being cheated of money.
