Publisher dismisses discrimination in controversial textbooks

The New General Studies textbooks that have Hong Kong primary school children match ethnic minorities to stereotypical jobs claiming to promote racial harmony has caused international uproar. However, the publisher still dismisses criticisms that the content was discriminatory, reports the SCMP.

In a statement released by the publishing house yesterday, the editors claimed that the textbooks’ theme were racial harmony and “the editors hoped offering examples relevant to the pupils’ lives would help press the message home”.

The publisher further reiterates, “The example in the textbook is not intended to denounce Filipinos. No job is superior or inferior to another. If anyone suspects the textbook is discriminating against Filipinos, it would only be the individual’s personal view.
