Hongkongers can breathe a collective sigh of relief as the Hong Kong Observatory has declared that the first super typhoon of the season, Typhoon Neoguri, does not have Hong Kong in its sights and will instead be heading straight for Japan (sorry!), according to the SCMP. No word, however, as to why this typhoon’s name is Japanese for “raccoon.”
But before you celebrate the fact that you won’t have to go through another week or two of gray, rainy, thundery misery, be warned that whatever meteorological magic is behind the super typhoon will also bring even higher temperatures to an already sweltering July. Last Friday and Saturday were the hottest days of the year so far, hitting 33.8 °C, and last June was in fact the hottest June since records began in 1884.
So kids, make sure you stay inside, stay hydrated, and yell at a climate change denier.
