CY Leung says he will sign anti-Occupy Central petition, and that he “oppose[s] using illegal means” to achieve political reform

The Chief Executive announced on Saturday that he will sign the Alliance for Peace and Democracy’s anti-Occupy Central petition. CY Leung says that it is “absolutely a personal action”, and that it would not put pressure on civil servants to sign. reports the SCMP.

“I oppose using illegal means to achieve any goals on political reform,” Leung said in his announcement. “So I would sign.”

He is joining the 28 political appointees who have either signed, or said that they would sign the petition “at a suitable time”. The only cabinet member who has decided not to sign the petition is Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen, saying that he wanted to keep a neutral stance on issues in the eye of the public. Financial Secretary John Tsang has not yet decided to sign the petition, stating that he will base his decision on personal views.

The petition has reached over 800,000 signatures.
