18 people arrested during July 1 will refuse to renew their bail

On the morning of July 2, 511 people were arrested for either participating in or helping to organise an unlawful assembly as they “rehearsed”. Twenty five people were released on bail, and now 18 of those people are saying that they will refuse to renew their bail.

“We will refuse to renew bail as we believe our act on July 2 was civil disobedience,” said  Alex Chow, one of the arrested students, reports the SCMP. “If police have enough evidence, either they should prosecute us now or release us unconditionally. We are ready to admit our guilt and accept the relevant penalty.”

Chow is the secretary general of the Federation of Students. Others among those who were arrested and now refusing to renew bail include LegCo member Lee Cheuk Yan and two district councillors.
