Welcome Back, Kevin Lau: Former Ming Pao editor who was brutally attacked in Feb. returns to work

Kevin Lau, the former editor-in-chief of Ming Pao, has started going to work again at Ming Pao today, where he now works in their electronic books and teaching materials division.

Walking with a cane as he arrived to the offices, Lau said that journalists should be brave, and that he himself will continue to “stand his ground” and “stick to the core principles of journalism” reports the SCMP.

“We have to be cautiously optimistic about any developments in the present political situation. But journalists should not yield to any pressure and must be courageous, especially at times of political instability,” Lau said.

Lau was attacked on Feburary 26 by two men with meat cleavers as he was getting out of his car in Sai Wan Ho. Most believe that it was a triad-style attack designed to hurt and maim but not to kill, according to the Independent.

Lau believes that the attack was made in an attempt to silence him. The Hong Kong Journalists Association called 2014 the “darkest year in several decades” for press freedom.

Two men were charged with “unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm” as well as theft, but neither have yet to enter a plea.
