The Lot brings beastly burgers and more to Sheung Wan’s Possession Street

COCONUTS HOT SPOT – The amalgamation of decades of culinary experience between two long-standing friends, The Lot is the brand new Western sensation in Sheung Wan.

Originally from Yorkshire, UK, Tony Higginbotham, who’s cheffed in Australia, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Russia since first leaving home 27 years ago, has now returned to the 852 to work alongside Szeto for Lun, a former colleague from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Together they have opened The Lot, the first independent offering from either party.

Craving a burger but resigned to the fact that there were no decent options in our part of Sheung Wan, it really did seem like fate when we stumbled across The Lot on its opening night last week. This is a restaurant with no less than 14 (that’s 14!) burgers on the menu, ranging in extravagance from the Number 1 (Wagyu beef, Jack cheese, relish and herbed mayo: HKD118) to The Lot Grand Burger (double Wagyu beef, grilled tiger prawns, French beens, guac, onion rings – the list goes on: HKD248).

The Lot Pizza Siciliana

Pizza Siciliana

Not wanting to push our incredible luck, we played it safe with the Number 1. Served on a the now-obligatory chopping board plate, in a light but textured seeded bun, with a nicely-dressed side salad and to-die-for spicy wedges, this burger really did tick all the boxes. We both agreed the patty would have benefited from a tiny bit more seasoning, however.

Also an out-and-proud pizza freak, I couldn’t pass up the chance to sample a new option, especially so close to Coconuts HK HQ! I went for the Siciliana (HKD168), which was a good size, crisp of base, sloppy of sauce, and ample of topping. Again, all boxes ticked, as well as one unwelcome extra box – that of anchovies – but to be fair, I had failed to read the menu closely enough. Editor’s prerogative!

Spaghetti with Clams

The Spaghetti with Clams (HKD168) was less memorable, purely for want of loosening up a little, although perhaps it just needed a gentle jiggle, as it did improve on the sauce-to-spag ratio as I got towards the bottom.

For those looking for something light (shame on you – have you seen the burger menu?), I can recommend the Corn Fed Chicken Salad (HKD118). Despite sounding a bit arty with its roasted cinnamon pear and pomegranate dressing, toasted walnuts and semi-dried tomatoes, the salad is a solid choice, either as a side or on its own, thanks to considered moderation of these strong flavours.

We had no room for pudding – although options include international favourites such as Panacotta, Sticky Date, Crème Brulée and Eton Mess – and we can’t comment on the booze selection as it’s BYO while the liquor licence is in the offing. It’s REALLY new!

I’m tempted to say that The Lot is perhaps a little overpriced for a burger joint, but that said, this is Sheung Wan, and the food we had was all pretty damn good. If The Lot can keep performing to the same standard (plus a pinch more salt in the burgers!), I’m sure it’ll become a firm favourite of mine and stand the test of time as a well-deserved Coconuts Hot Spot.

Where: 22 Possession Street, Sheung Wan
Opening hours: 11:30am to 10:30pm, Monday to Friday, 10:30am to 11:30pm Saturday and Sunday.
