Puff the Electronic Dragon: Man, 30, arrested for selling e-cigarette liquid online

In some Hong Kong establishments, the smell of stale cigarette smoke is very slowly getting replaced by the artificial, often-fruity smell of e-cigarette vapour.

Already quite popular in some cities in the US and Europe, e-cigarettes are starting to catch on with smokers who want to be slightly healthier or quit altogether (though it must be noted that whether it actually is healthier is the subject of debate).

But the local market hasn’t quite caught up with the growing demand for e-cigarettes, so it seems that some are turning to selling e-cigarette refill liquid…illegally. Dun, dun dun!

A 30-year-old man was arrested yesterday after the police investigated public complaints regarding the sale of “Feelvape”, the refill liquid for a type of e-cigarette.

Nicotine is considered a Part I poison by the Department of Health, therefore “nicotine-containing electronic cigarette products” are classified as pharmaceutical products that must be registered with the government and sold at a pharmacy under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

Though it’s true that little is known about the safety of e-cigarettes, it seems silly that in the meantime nicotine-delivering cigarettes are sold freely at 7-Elevens and at street stalls. Or maybe it’s just because the government isn’t getting its cut.
