What would YOU do to make the world a better place?: See what your fellow Hongkongers had to say

In a city like Hong Kong, it’s almost second nature to dismiss someone as a flyer distributor or a ‘chugger’ if you get randomly approached on the street. Or, if you’re in TST, you’ve got your guard up all the time because you really don’t want to buy that watch or suit. But if a bunch of high school students come at you with questions about society and personal identity, we guarantee you’ll do a double take.

If you could make the world a better place, what would you change?” “The war. No more tanks.”

Believing in the philosophy that “There are no small parts, only small actors”, the young go-getters behind the Cameos Hong Kong project are kicking up a social storm by addressing issues like personal ambition, socially implicated gender roles, racism, individualism and conformity via film and photography.

“I want to change the state I’m in. I want to be more hardworking and less lazy than before.”

The group’s Change project saw unsuspecting souls around the city pleasantly surprised with questions like “What would you do to make the world a better place?” and “What’s one thing you really want right now?”. Answers, in return, have ranged from “I would stop the wars” to “Can I ask for a summer holiday extension?”.

“If you could change one thing about the world, what would you do?” “Probably make everything like… slow down a little.”

Natalyn Pow from the Cameos Hong Kong team said, “It’s so easy to get caught up in the hectic way of life in Hong Kong and we wanted to take this opportunity to encourage people to pause and reflect on the things they value… Our long term goal is make some kind of positive change in the community, no matter how small or big”.

“What changes do you want to see in Hong Kong?” “A drop in property prices!”

Good going, you guys! All the best with your project. We hope to see the fruits of your labour very soon.
