The Shui Hau mudflats of Lantau Island in black and white (PHOTO ESSAY)

Venture off the beaten track a little – nothing is all that far in Hong Kong – and you’ll soon discover landscapes you would have never imagined to exist within the confines of our city.

Shui Hau is a mudflat in a bay on the south side of Lantau Island. Its name means “water opening”, or if translated more literally, “water mouth”. Such mudflats, with their brackish waters, are perfect nursery grounds for various marine creatures, like young horseshoe crabs (before they get snapped up by some seafood eatery or another).

The mudflats are beautiful enough already, but some strange meteorological phenomenon was happening on this day in March, with dense fog covering the entire bay to create a rather surreal scene.

How to get there: Take bus #11 or #23 from Tung Chung Town (outside the Tung Chung MTR station) or take bus #4 from the Mui O ferry pier.
