Hong Kong Doctor Who fans were left feeling slightly short changed last weekend after the show’s first lesbian kiss in its 50 year history was cut from the new series because of “Asian broadcasting rules”.
The first episode of the new series, which premiered in Hong Kong on Now TV’s BBC Entertainment channel, saw a smooch between lizard-woman Madame Vastra and her human wife Jenny Flint completely cut from the episode.
Viewers in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and South Korean also missed out on the action, which has created quite a buzz among Doctor Who fans around the world.
The BBC has stressed that as there was only one edit for the whole of Asia, they needed to comply with the strictest country’s regulation. We’re looking at you Malaysia!
