Don’t cry over spilled… Four units of blood wasted after Red Cross forgets about donations

Someone’s in trouble! The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) has just admitted to a boo-boo they made back in late June when they collected 52 units of blood at a group donation event at its Central centre.

Normally, all blood is transported to the BTS headquarters where it’s properly stored and processed, but someone (perhaps a bit light-headed from giving too much blood?) forgot to arrange the necessary transportation to get the blood to the HQ. As a result, the donations were left unprocessed for about 24 hours.

Luckily, they were in designated blood bins that have the correct temperature conditions, so only four units of blood had to be thrown out since they had not been processed within 24 hours. The remaining 48 units were left for less than 24 hours and after undergoing “stringent tests”, were deemed good to go.

The BTS apologised to the blood donors and immediately launched an investigation into what happened. But until now they’ve kept the matter private, and only recently informed the Hospital Authority about it. The BTS admits they had “misjudged” the seriousness of the incident by not telling the authorities nor the public.

Vampires who thought they were safe from all the recent food safety scandals may have to think again…
