Not his cup of tea: Hong Kong prisoner attempts suicide with plastic mug

A Hong Kong prisoner has been placed under psychological observation after trying to slit his wrists with a plastic tea mug.

The 32-year-old – who was originally remanded for publishing obscene articles (Apple Daily?) and destroying others’ property – broke the mug while inside a cell at the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre on Wednesday and used the sharp piece to cut his arm.

He was immediately stopped by officers but was sent to the centre’s hospital with minor injuries. A clinical psychologist will now follow up the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, “The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services.”

That’s tea off the menu then. Get well soon, fella.
