Starve your couch: Hong Kong ‘Coin Carts’ will collect your loose change and give you back real money!

Got a big bowl, jar, drawer or sofa full of coins you’re never going to spend? Yeah, you do.

Not any more! The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has today announced a nifty new scheme that will see two super souped-up “Coin Carts” cruising Hong Kong for your loose change.

Don’t panic, you’re not going to end up out of pocket. The carts are equipped with two coin counting machines, a wheel chair lift (for your nan), plus a couple of staff to help you figure it all out.

Just shove your coins in the slot and receive crisp bank notes in return or money on your Octopus card. If you were planning on giving it all to charity anyway, you can also use the Community Chest donation box. All bases covered.

Unveiling the plan today, Chief Executive of the HKMA, Mr Norman Chan, said, “The coin collection programme provides a channel for the public to get value for their coins in addition to the existing banking system. The coins collected will be recirculated to meet public demand, making circulation more efficient and reducing the need for minting new coins.”

The two Coin Carts, of which the blingin’ exteriors were designed by secondary school students, will be covering “various” Hong Kong districts on a rotational basis, starting from next month and ending in September 2016.
