It was a classic case of “what did we just watch?” when we stumbled across this weird and wonderful video, desperately attempting to teach a naïve gweilos the subtle nuances of Cantonese tones…by talking about how bananas, sausages and Hong Kong smell good. Not sure with can agree with the latter!
Kicking things off with Emma Stone’s signature Easy A “yum” face and the ever-intriguing question: “What smells good?”, Leung Fido, the creator of the video, does his best to demonstrate the delicate differences between the three phrases.
Totally confused? Have a watch to see what we’re on about…although you might still be confused.
Set to somewhat catchy (but terribly unfitting) 1960s spy-flick background music, the video makes for an entertaining language lessons on a number of levels.
All that’s left to ask is: does Hong Kong smell as fragrant, less fragrant, or more fragrant than a sausage?
