Hong Kong gov’t says it respects the students’ boycott and their aspiration to uphold democracy

Perhaps some expected the Hong Kong government to wag their fingers at disobeying students for not attending their classes, but they’ve actually released a statement saying they respected the students’ decision and that they’ve “always attached importance” to nurturing students who can think critically.

“The HKSAR Government respects the aspiration and perseverance of students in upholding democracy and their expectations for and commitment to the future of Hong Kong,” the statement says.

In the statement they’ve also delivered this kicker: the government “firmly believes that a step forward in Hong Kong’s constitutional development is better than a stalemate”. It’s like they’re patting the students on the head for their admirable effort, but telling that they should compromise because you can’t always get what you want.

Well, that’s why in history we often leave the fighting to those who still have that youthful enthusiasm and boundless optimism. So to quote the great Commander Quincy: never give up, never surrender!
