Hong Kong stands down riot police as protestors ‘calm’… for now

Hong Kong police have stood down their anti-riot deployment as democracy protestors seem to have calmed.

Whether fatigue is setting in, or it’s the lull before another storm tonight remains to be seen.

Classes at schools in Wan Chia, Central and Western District have been suspended, and many scheduled events cancelled. More than 30 banks have also been temporarily closed.

Police are asking protestors to vacate some of the roads in Central and Admiralty to allow emergency vehicles through.

A spokesman said: “As those people gathering on these roads have generally calmed down, the Police have stood down the anti-riot deployment.”

Protestors are also being urged “to stay calm and disperse peacefully as soon as possible.”
