American Cybersecurity researchers believe they have uncovered viruses controlled by a “Chinese-speaking entity” that are being used to spy on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protestors through their mobile phones.
Lacoon Mobile Security found malicious software known as Xsser, which is capable of stealing call logs, passwords, photos and text messages from Apple devices, while investigating similar malware for Android operating systems. Both have been found to be targeting Hong Kong protestors.
The Android spyware was spread via malicious links on WhatsApp, but it is yet unclear how iOS devices are being infected with Xsser. Michael Shauloy, the Chief Executive of Lacoon, told Reuters yesterday that it is the most sophisticated malware ever used on Apple devices, adding that the code for the server is written in Chinese.
Suspicious that!
