You know you’ve made it when CY Leung’s daughter threatens to sue you. Chai Yan Leung, the 22-year-old offspring of Hong Kong’s embattled chief executive, has warned of legal action against Coconuts Hong Kong – as well as the Daily Mail, the Business Insider and the National Post – after a story we broke last week went insanely viral all around the world.
Nicknamed “Princess CY” due to her self-confessed spoilt and vain antics, Miss Leung ruffled many feathers on Oct. 1 when she used her Facebook page to thank Hong Kong tax payers for funding her wardrobe in response to seemingly negative comments she received about a new piece of jewellery.
“This is actually a beautiful necklace bought at Lane Crawford (yes- funded by all you HK taxpayers!! So are all my beautiful shoes and dresses and clutches!! Thank you so much!!!!) Actually maybe I shouldn’t say ‘all you’- since most of you here are probably unemployed hence have all this time obsessed with bombarding me with messages.”
The comment was seen as particularly insensitive at a time when tens of thousands of Hongkongers were filling the streets as part of the so-called ‘Umbrella Revoltuion’ to demand universal suffrage, the resignation of Miss Leung’s “puppet” father and better equality in the territory.
But Princess CY, who studied law at the London School of Economics, is apparently not too chuffed about the fact that her public Facebook activity became Coconuts Media’s biggest story ever and was subsequently picked up by numerous publications across the globe. Again taking to her Facebook page, Leung claims she will sue the offending media outlets with defamation… or libel… she just hasn’t decided which yet.
We have been warned indeed.
