Photos of beaten Civic Party member released along with footage of water throwing before alleged mass police attack

Occupy Central has released shocking pictures of injuries sustained by Civic Party member Ken Tsang, allegedly at the hands of Hong Kong police during this morning’s violent pro-democracy protests.

Meanwhile, the personnel suspected of involvement have been “transferred away from their current positions” (that doesn’t sound like a particularly harsh punishment), according to comments made by secretary for security Lai Tung-kwok a short while ago.

Demonstrators and press still in the area bombarded government officials with insults and questions, respectively, as they attended a Legco meeting this morning. All condemned any beating of peaceful protesters (obviously), although Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee insisted that no one should jump to conclusions until an investigation has been completed.

News of the alleged beating spread quickly around Hong Kong this morning after TVB released a video that appeared to show a motionless man being carried into a secluded spot before being beaten by six officers. Tsang’s lawyers later claimed that the victim is their client.

For those wondering whether or not the police were provoked into said beating, Now TV has released further footage, which they claim shows Tsang pouring water on police from above before being pulled away by another member of the public. Ken’s actions don’t look particularly fierce, we have to say, but then again, nobody likes being splashed.

Occupy Central has, unsurprisingly, condemned the alleged attack. In a statement, the pro-democracy organisation said: “Tsang did not resist, obstruct or pose a threat to police officers in the clear-out operation. Any person not convicted by a court of law should be considered innocent and the police officers must absolutely not resort to extra-judicial punishment.”

Democracy Party lawmaker Sin Chung-kai has proposed an inquiry into the police’s handling of the movement – a proposal that has now been endorsed by 25 of his counterparts.
