Occupy off the map: ‘Civic Square’ and ‘Beating Corner’ removed from Hong Kong Google Maps

It’s official – Occupy Central has taken Hong Kong off the map… or maybe Google has taken Occupy Central off the map. Either way, we were pretty excited about the fact that a couple of newly renamed key protest locations were appearing on Google Maps… until we realised they weren’t anymore.

The forecourt in front of the East Wing of the Central Government Offices (a site of contention for the protesters) was appearing as “Civic Square” earlier in the week, while an area just off Lung Wo Road was also showing up as “Beating Corner” until about 10 minutes ago.

If you don’t know (jeez, read the news) “Beating Corner” is where seven Hong Kong police officers were caught on video allegedly giving pro-democracy demonstrator and Civic Party member Ken Tsang a jolly good kicking last week.

Although these now notorious landmarks were added to Google Maps by users, it seems the Google God itself doesn’t approve. Boo Google (but thanks for making our jobs way easier).
