COCONUTS TV: Halloween face painting just got serious

A sparkly, flowery Halloween-themed scene

Dee Lin, 26, is a local face painter whose work is a cut above the usual calibre. Forget the childish, sticky face paint of your childhood and get ready to have a genuine work of art painted onto your face (or body) in minutes.

Check out the Coconuts TV time lapse in which Lin demonstrates her face-painting prowess:

Lin first tried bridal makeup, then special effects and stage makeup. Rather unfortunately, she quickly came to the realisation that she was allergic to latex, a staple material most makeup.

Ever the optimist, however, Lin found out that face painters used latex-free colours, and tried her hand at it while on a working holiday in Australia.

After she returned to her native Hong Kong, she realized that the local face-painting scene was simply not up to global standards (who would have thought?).

One of Lin’s works on a Coconuts Hong Kong team member. Who needs heavy jewelry when you can have weightless body paint?

Local artists still used oil-based makeup that come in single-colour cases, instead of the water-based makeup that come in “rainbow cakes”, the multi-coloured cases of paint that allow for easy mixing.

Lin’s business has since grown almost entirely through word-of-mouth, letting her high-quality paints and work speak for themselves. She now holds face-painting workshops, sells face painting kits (for those who can’t afford her services) in addition to painting faces at private parties.

You can book Lin on her website. Her normal rate is HKD2,000 for two hours plus transportation if the event is not within a ten-minute walk of an MTR station.
