Because being on the cover of TIME wasn’t enough — with your photo shot by legendary photographer James Nachtwey, no less — Joshua Wong, the 18-year-old leader of the pro-democracy student group Scholarism, wrote an op-ed for the New York Times.

In the piece Wong says his generation is “angry and disappointed” that Beijing and CY Leung’s administration are “trying to steal his future”.

Wong acknowledges that the protests may not, in the end, achieve what he and his fellow activists are asking for. “But, if nothing else, it has delivered hope,” Wong writes.

The 18-year-old ended the piece on an aggressive, but optimistic, note.

“I would like to remind every member of the ruling class in Hong Kong: Today you are depriving us of our future, but the day will come when we decide your future. No matter what happens to the protest movement, we will reclaim the democracy that belongs to us, because time is on our side.”
