Say Mo to Cancer: Hong Kong celebrates its third Movember

It’s that time of year again! As the temperatures finally dwindle, Hong Kong is aching for a change of pace and style – leather jackets, scarves, crisp autumn winds. And, for the more hirsute amongst us, it might be time to chuck away the razor and embrace the mo.

November Movember is upon us and it’s set to be a bushy month all round. Since the official launch of Movember HK in 2012, the movement has gone from strength to strength, raising more awareness and funds for men’s health each year. And its more important than ever, as the Hong Kong Cancer Registry reports that the number of prostate and testicular cancer cases has doubled over the last year, with more than 1,700 new cases recorded in 2011 alone

The proceeds raised by Movember will go towards cancer research and the Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s “Going Through” project, a free rehabilitation service for prostate cancer patients that aids them in overcoming the cultural, physical and psychosocial obstacles of their disease. Talk about motivation.

And, to top off Movember HK’s impressive campaigning, they’ve recruited singer Alex Lam, VLT-loving racing driver Darryl O’Young, Cantopop singer Ryan Hui, artists Peter Yuill and Mark Goss, and Hong Kong rugby captain Nick Hewson as brand ambassadors. Swoon!

Besides the obvious charitable reasons to get on the beardy bandwagon, there are countless benefits to joining in the follicular fun – having something to twirl when you’re feeling pensive, keeping your upper lip toasty, and for foodies, grossing people out with a self-styled beard bowl.

To get involved, register as a “Mo Bro” or a “Mo Sista” with Movember HK and post your progress either as an individual or as part of a team. Any teams of 10 or more are eligible for weekly surprise deliveries from San Miguel! Beards and brews, what’s not to love?

First time Mo’ Bros, do not fret. Everyone knows a little facial hair goes a long way. So cast your aspersions aside and get into the thick of it! Do a little soul searching and find your mo’dentity – are you a classic Tom Selleck, a quirky Salvador Dali or an inquisitive Hercule Poirot? Mo Sistas, if you want to join in, it’s not too late to get hairy for Halloween. Or, if you don’t want to restrict your mo’pportunities to just fancy dress, forgo the tweezers and wax and rock Movember Frida Kahlo style. You never know, it might grow on you.

Here’s a guide on how to grow a moustache from Nick Offerman, the owner of what is arguably the best mo’ on TV right now:

In case you couldn’t tell, we can’t get enough of the ‘mo jokes. Here are some ideas for Movember team names: Mo’vers and Shakers, The Movemberists, Mo’Town Junk.
