Student leaders consider bringing protest to Beijing in time for APEC forum

Alex Chow, the leader of the Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS), announced last night that they are considering protesting in Beijing while the city hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on Nov. 10 and 11.

International heads of state, including President Obama, will be attending the forum, which is taking place in China for the first time in 13 years.

Chow said that HKFS will discuss the plan’s level of support and estimated feasibility with its group members.

“The chances of success are unknown… The number of people [who would go to Beijing] is undecided,” Chow said.

Though many Hongkongers possess “Home Return Permits”, which allow for free travel through China, China sometimes denies entry to anti-Beijing activists.

Many have wondered what’s next for the protests. Maybe this kind of escalation is it.
