British banker arrested after two dead prostitutes found in Wan Chai flat

Two murdered women have been found in the Wan Chai apartment of a 29 year old British banker. The women, believed to be sex workers, were of Southeast Asian or Asian ethnicity, and were probably killed days apart.

The suspect, who has not yet been charged, has been reported by Reuters to be a Bank of America Merrill Lynch employee.

He was taken into custody after he contacted the police in the early hours of Saturday, asking them to come to his apartment.

Upon arriving at his flat in J Residence, officers discovered the naked body of a woman in the living room. The victim, believed to be between the ages of 25-30, was found with wounds to her neck and buttocks.

CCTV footage showed the victim and suspect returning to the residential building at around 12am. A police source said that they are investigating the influence of illegal drugs on the suspect during the incident, after a small amount of cocaine was found in the living room.

Approximately eight hours after the discovery of the first woman, the naked and already decomposing corpse of a 25 year old Indonesian woman was found inside a suitcase on the apartment balcony. A police source told the South China Morning Post, “She was nearly decapitated and her hands and legs were bound with ropes.”

Investigations showed that she had already been in the suitcase for three to four days, likely causing an odour described by a resident as “a stink in the building like a dead animal”.

While international news sources have mentioned the generally low rate of violent crimes in Hong Kong, recent months have seen a rise in truly horrifying murder cases, such as the man who salted and cooked his parents. However, the murder of these two women will possibly cause more controversy due to the suspect’s expatriate status and the parallels to the notorious “milkshake murder” of Merrill Lynch banker Robert Kissel at the hands of his wife in 2003.
