Rurik George Caton Jutting, 29, has been charged with two counts of murder after the bodies of two women were found in his apartment in Wan Chai. He is being detained until he appears before the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts today.

At 3:45am on Saturday morning, police entered Jutting’s 31st floor apartment in J Residence, a luxurious complex in the heart of Wan Chai, after he called the police.

Officers first found the body of a naked woman in his living room. She was stabbed in the neck and in the buttocks.

The woman, was possibly a domestic helper who worked as a DJ on the side. There have been conflicting reports on whether she is from Indonesia or the Philippines. The Mirror has posted an alleged photo of her, taken from what they believe is her Facebook page.

Eight hours later, the police found the corpse of another woman stuffed inside a suitcase on the apartment’s balcony. She was reportedly found naked and almost decapitated. They believe that the woman had been dead for up to five days, as the body was decomposing with maggots found in it, reports the AFP.

The police took so long to find the second victim as they had to follow strict procedures for collecting evidence in the apartment before getting to the balcony.

The Standard has identified this victim as Sumarti Ningsih, a 25-year-old Indonesian woman who had only been in Hong Kong as a visitor for less than a month, according to the Indonesian consulate. The SCMP says security camera footage shows her arriving at J Residence with Jutting at around midnight.

Ningsih had previously been arrested on suspicion of breaching her conditions of stay. She was also the cousin of an Indonesian domestic worker working in Hong Kong, who helped the police to identify the body.

Police detectives told the SCMP that there is reason to believe the two women were sex workers.

Here’s a Daily Mirror video showing police officers investigating the scene:

A resident of the building told the SCMP that he had noticed a weird smell lately. “There was a stink in the building like a dead animal,” he said.

Jutting, a Briton who had moved to Hong Kong last year, had recently resigned from his job as a trader at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

According to what appears to be his LinkedIn profile, he had attended Cambridge University, where he studied history and law.
