Three Hong Kong tourists killed, one injured, in New Zealand car crash

Three Hong Kong nationals were killed and another injured while on holiday in New Zealand after a truck collided with their rental van yesterday.

The driver and the two rear-seat passengers died at the scene in Central Otago, about 850 kilometres from Wellington. The driver was a 60 year-old-man named Allan Chan Wing-fai, while the two female passengers were Connie Chong Kwai-tei, 61, and Ng Yin-wan, 56.

The injured person, a 59-year-old man, was seated in the front besides Chan. He was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital where he is now in stable condition.

The four had been part of a nine-person group travelling in two separate vehicles. The horrific accident occurred at an intersection on a state highway. The van was turned over and badly crumpled in the incident, forcing emergency crews to cut into the chassis to reach the victims.

The driver of the truck, which was travelling from Wanaka towards Cromwell, was shaken, but was not injured, reports the Southland Times.

In an interview with the Otago Daily Times, local constable Greg Nolet said the intersection is dangerous due to the 100 speed limit. However, despite the potential for crashes, he recalls only one previous incident in August 2013 in which a cyclist was seriously injured.

The SCMP reports that Hong Kong’s Immigration Department has been in touch with the Chinese embassy in New Zealand to contact the victims’ families and to offer assistance.
