CocoBeats: What to check out music-wise in Hong Kong this November

Here’s a Dirty Dozen for what to see, check out, explore and enjoy in Hong Kong’s music scene this month….

Super Junior

Seven albums, numerous members, a decade in the biz. It’s no wonder Super Junior is at the top of the musical heap in Korea. Expect screams a plenty and a slick, slick, slick, choreographed show when they come to Hong Kong.

When: Nov. 8, 7pm
Where: Asia World Expo
Price: HKD480 – HKD1,680
Tickets: here

RubberBand

In today’s musical climate, RubberBand, one of Hong Kong’s top local Cantopop acts (they rock too!), know that they have to keep churning it out in order to stay relevant – hence a show at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in support of their new album “Frank”. With emotions sure to be charged due to their alleged support of the Pro-Democracy movement, the group say they are going back to their roots: “No fancy horn section, no percussion, no changing clothes or swapping out guitars for every song,” says guitarist Clement Fung.

When: Nov. 8 & 9, 8:15pm
Where: Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Wan Chai
Price: HKD300 – HKD500
Tickets: here

The Electriq Launch Party featuring Carl Craig and Pan-Pot

One of the pioneers of Detroit’s techno scene gets his groove on in Hong Kong for the first time ever at the somewhat unlikely Central venue, Zuma. Expect a mixture of bright, bubbly sounds tempered by darker, danceable grooves as Craig has a slew of electronic aliases. With support by German DJ Pan-Pot.

When: Nov. 15, 10pm
Where: Zuma, Level 5/6 Landmark, 15 Queens Road, Central
Price: HKD480
Tickets: here

Jay Chou

Movies, TV shows, endorsement…and yes, music. Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou has done it all. His last album “Opus” was released in 2012 and the tour in support of it is finally hitting the city! Expect big sets, costumes and plenty of those only-in-Hong Kong glowsticks.

When: Nov. 19 – 24, 8:15pm
Where: AsiaWorld Arena
Price: HKD380 – HKD500
Tickets: here

Sasha Grey

Anyone remotely familiar with adult entertainment knows the name Sasha Grey. Yes, that one! Only, she’s not in the racket anymore. The, uh, actress, is a published novelist and now…drum roll…a DJ! On the back of her single “Heat of the Night”, she’ll be performing a DJ set ONLY at Dragon-I during her debut Asian tour. Wouldn’t dream of her doing anything else…

When: Nov. 21, 11pm
Where: Dragon-I, 60 Wyndham Street, Central
Price: HKD500
Tickets: email info@dragon-i.com.hk

The Voice Of China

Ala “The Voice”, “the X-Factor” and “American Idol”, “The Voice of China” is one of of country’s most popular TV shows. Naturally, the final four from series three have hit the road. So this will be the opportunity for a mass audience at the Hong Kong Coliseum to weigh in on semi-final contestants Yu Feng, Zhang Bichen, Qin Yuzi and Parhat. Bring it…

When: Nov.11, 8:15pm
Where: Hong Kong Coliseum, 9 Cheong Wan Road, Hung Hom, Kowloon
Price: HKD580 – HKS989
Tickets: here

Fifi Rong

The female singer from Beijing (who currently lives in London) brings her eclecticism to HK for her first ever show. Rong has worked with both Tricky and Boris Blank from Yello, so expect the unexpected. That means plenty of electronica, a touch of jazz and hip hop. Throw in some dub and top it off with some floating, dreamy vocals. Voila – a critic’s darling for late 2014 and beyond.

When: Nov. 14, 10pm
Where: XXX Gallery, B/F, 353-363 Des Voeux Road West, Sai Wan
Price: HKD100 – HKD150
Tickets: One the door

61st Macau Grand Prix Weekend with Quentin Mosimann

The cars will be racing around the city track at the 61st annual Macau Grand Prix, and much, much later, Quentin Mosimann will be behind the decks before the beautiful people at the cavernous Club Cubic. The #69 ranked DJ in the world will offer his own eclectic set, which has plenty of admirers and is certain to be taken up a few gears during his third appearance here.

When: Nov. 15, 11:30pm
Where: Club Cubic, Level 2, The Shops at The Boulevard, City of Dreams, Estrada do Istmo, Cotai, Macau
Price: HKD300
Tickets: email rsvp@cubic-cod.com

Tribute To Amy Winehouse

There will surely be renditions of “Rehab” and the rest of the best of the late Amy Winehouse on this special night. Local singers Ginger Kwan and Jennifer Palor will be joined by UK singer Davide Pasquilini in doing their best Winehouse impressions. To top off this intriguing evening, Robin Banerjee, Winehouse’s former guitarist, will ensure that the work of the hard partying singer sizzles as it should on the live stage.

When: Nov. 21 & 22 and 29
Where: (Nov. 21, 22) Orange Peel, 2/F, 38-44 D’Aguilar Street, Central. (Nov. 29) Grappa’s Cellar, 3/F, Iuki Tower, 5 O’brien Road, Wan Chai, 9:30pm
Price: HKD288 – HKD388
Tickets: here

Mr Big

Somehow, the American rock act has a quiet saga. Best known for “To Be With You”, the catchy early 90s chart topping single that stuck like sludge in the brain, the group became huge in Japan before breaking up. Now back together with a new album, the formidable musicians will surely rock out more than you think before the middle-age set.

When: Nov. 25, 7pm
Where: KITEC
Price: HKD480 – HKD880
Tickets: here

Meiko

With a just released third album, US singer Meiko is set to make a surprise appearance on our shores in the confines of Kwun Tong’s Hidden Agenda venue. Already featured in such shows as “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Pretty Little Liars” and with appearances at the Sundance Film Festival, her moody electronic pop is catching on one show at a time.

Where: Hidden Agenda, 2A, Wing Fu Industrial Bldg, 15-17 Tai Yip Street, Kwun Tong
Price: HKD150 – HKD200
Tickets: here

Clockenflap

The eclectic, joyous Flaming Lips. Actor Jack Black and his humorous, metallic spoof band Tenacious D, the eternally funky, horn-driven dance band Kool & the Gang, and Scotland’s dependable, hummable, award-winning Travis. These are just a few of the dozen local and international acts who will be appearing at Clockenflap before more than 40,000 fans in West Kowloon at the end of the month.

When: Nov. 29 – 31
Where: West Kowloon Cultural District
