Power Up: Hong Kong teenager arrested for smuggling meth in plug extension unit

We never cease to be amazed at the innovative and ever-creative ways people attempt to smuggle drugs into Hong Kong. We’ve had salad dressing, shampoo, compression shorts, and even curry, but Hong Kong Customs’ latest methamphetamine haul is perhaps the least conspicuous of all.

Yesterday, a 17-year-old man/boy was arrested at Lok Ma Chau Control point with a kilogram of suspected meth hidden inside… (and we debated at Coconuts HK HQ how best to describe this), a power socket extension unit. You know, those things with lots of sockets that you plug into a another socket so you can use more plugs. If in doubt, just look at the photo above.

The young man, who claims to be unemployed, will appear at Fanling Magistracy today. The maximum penalty for drug trafficking is life imprisonment (which would no doubt be a pretty long time for this guy) and a fine of HKD5 million. The confiscated stash is thought to have a street value of HKD430,000.
