Yellow umbrella to white flag: Occupy Central leaders prepare to surrender to Hong Kong police

In a strange interpretation of civil disobedience, Occupy Central leaders have announced that they will surrender to police next week by way of showing they are willing to accept the legal consequences of their actions.

Benny Tai, Chan Kin-Man and Chu Yiu-ming say they will turn themselves in next Friday (Nov. 22) if they haven’t already been arrested in what is largely expected to be the biggest attempted protest clear up yet.

On Monday, Hong Kong’s High Court extended an injunction in favour of private transport firm Kwung Chung Bus, who claim that the Occupy protests have affected their business. Under the court order, bailiffs may start clearing the Mong Kok and Admiralty Protest sites as early as tonight. Dun, dun dun!

According to the SCMP, the Occupy co-founders are willing to surrender themselves, but not before next Monday, when the planned joining of the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges is due to finally go ahead. They want to make sure that Hong Kong chief executive CY Leung looks anything but in control of the situation when that momentous occasion occurs.

However, in comments that seem to characterise the often reported generational divide been the various factions of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy groups, Lester Shum, deputy leader of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, said he would rather be arrested than surrender.

That’s the spirit, lad!
