Do you hear the people moan? Support for Occupy Central drops to lowest level yet

Support for the Occupy Central movement has fallen to its lowest level since the Hong Kong protests began, according to the results of the latest of one of those now-very-frequent surveys.

CUHK found more than two thirds (67.4 percent) of Hongkongers want the protesters to leave the streets, which have been occupied for almost two months.

Public support for the movement as a whole has also slipped since the last survey in October, with 43.5 percent of participants saying they are against the Umbrella Revolution as opposed to 33.9 percent who said they are for it. The university found that younger and highly educated people were more likely to support the protests.

The interviews were carried out with 1,030 Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong residents between Nov. 5 and Nov. 11.

Interestingly, they reported that whatever side of the debate the respondents found themselves on, nearly all were disappointed with the government’s response to the occupation. Around 40 percent said government action was “inadequate” (i.e. not enough tear gas) and 48.5 percent said the government needed to make more concessions (i.e. universal suffrage).
