Too good for its own good: HKTV app launch so popular it crashes site

Hong Kong Television Network (HKTV) – the company denied a free-to-air licence by the Hong Kong government last year – yesterday launched their new app, which was so popular it made the site crash!

Ricky Wong and his team announced a massive one million downloads after the launch ceremony yesterday afternoon, which was conveniently timed to coincide with TVB’s 47th anniversary programming, no doubt to dent the rival’s ratings. You sly dogs, you!

HKTV kicked off live streaming at 8pm, but many disappointed would-be viewers took to social media to grumble about the fact they couldn’t get on the website, raising questions about the stability of the HKTV servers.

A HKTV spokesman announced that the service is now much improved, but that the online shopping segment, which was also meant to be launched this month, will now be postponed until January 2015.

The denial of HKTV’s application for a free-to-air licence sparked massive protests in October 2013, especially after permits were given to I-CABLE and PCCW. Some suggested the decision was politically motivated, a charge the government denied.

HKTV later acquired the mobile TV network previously owned my CMHK.

Now HKTV can be watched through an android TV box, a smart TV, computer, smartphone or tablet, as long as everything’s working right. The app can be download from the website, the App Store and the Google Play Store.
