Local Press editor and far right activist among latest arrests for LegCo storming

A total of 10 people have now been arrested for taking part in the storming of the Legislative Council building on Wednesday morning.

Included in the list of suspects is Leung Kam-cheung, editor of anti-Beiing website Local Press, and a member of the far right political group Civic Passion known as the “Frenchman”.

Leung was arrested yesterday, accused of having planned and initiated the Wednesday morning aggression.

Raymond Wong Yuk-man, a legislative councillor, called Leung’s arrest “ridiculous” and an infringement on press freedom. Local Press insists its editor was wearing a press badge and covering the event as a reporter.

And remember that guy from the videos who briefly entered the LegCo building, only to lose his nerve and scuttle back out again minutes later? According to the Apple Daily and various witnesses, that was the “Frenchman”.

The cheeky trespasser was seen wearing a red shirt, glasses and a medical mask, suspiciously similar garb to that worn by the “Frenchman” when he spoke to protesters in Mong Kok earlier on Tuesday evening.

According to EJ Insight, Wong Yeung-tat, founder of Civic Passion, confirmed that a member of the activist group had been arrested. While Wong he denies his group’s involvement in sparking the incident, he confesses that he’s confused by the public outcry, insisting that all occupied ground has been gained by storming barricades.

At least three glass doors at the LegCo building were smashed by a horde of masked men on Wednesday morning at 1am. Metal barricades and concrete tiles were used to storm the building, with the police retaliating with rounds of pepper spray.
