Stephen Shiu, a Hong Kong screenwriter and the founder of memehk.com, an online news portal, claims that his van was attacked in North Point while he was being chauffered by his driver.
Shiu says that at around 11pm his vehicle was suddenly blocked by cars both in front and behind, reports Apple Daily.
Metal rod-wielding assailants then appeared and reportedly vandalised his car at 1067 King’s Road. His driver managed to maneuver the vehicle away from the attackers and drove straight to the police station, where they reported the crime.
Footage of the damage, posted onto memehk.com’s Facebook page, shows broken windscreen and dents on both the side and back of the car:
The Facebook post also condemned the violent attack.
Shiu is a pro-democracy advocate who has in the past endorsed the Occupy Central movement as well as radical pro-democracy groups like People Power and the League of Social Democrats.
He is also the founder of Hong Kong Reporter, an online platform that was the home of many more radical, left-wing political ideas.
The Hong Kong Journalists Assocation called 2014 the “darkest [year] for press freedom for several decades”, citing violent incidents like the cleaver attack on Kevin Lau, a former editor at Ming Pao.
