Teenage girl caught with 4.2 kilos of ketamine in backpack at Hong Kong border

A 17-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle 4.2 kilograms of ketamine into Hong Kong in a rucksack.

Let’s just stop for a minute and think about how much 4.2 kilograms actually weighs, and the imagine a frail teenager trying to sneak it across a border. Then again, we’re just assuming she’s frail because of her age. Perhaps she’s big-boned.

The girl, who claimed to be unemployed, was intercepted at Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point (right on the border with Shenzen), yesterday afternoon. According to police, she was casually carrying HKD530,000’s worth of the drug in her backpack.

She has been charged with one count of trafficking a dangerous drug and will appear at Fanling Magistrates’ Court tomorrow. She could face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of HKD5 million if found guilty.
