A young Hong Kong Catholic who recently took a selfie with the Pope is seeking the support of the Vatican after being arrested in Mong Kok this week. Talk about aiming high!
Giovanni Pang, who managed to take a quick snap with Pope Francis during his visit to South Korea back in August, was detained along with more than a 100 others during the Tuesday night and Wednesday morning clearing of the Mong Kok protest site.
He has now been released on bail. Thank God? We’re sure he will.
According to UCANews, in a valiant effort to step up to the best-buddy mark, Pang’s friend and popular Hong Kong DJ Henry Chan has taken the initiative of penning an open letter on Facebook to Pope Francis himself, asking to bring “this issue [to the] Vatican’s kind attention”.
“Do you recall Giovanni Pang from Hong Kong who met you twice in South Korea earlier?” Chan hopefully asks. Doubtful.
We’re not sure how well this is going to go down with the pontiff, who’s probably not on Facebook that much and managed to avoid Pang’s question in South Korea about “control and oppression” of Catholics in China. Friar Federico Lombardi, the Vatican’s spokesperson, however, came to old Franny’s rescue by insisting that the pope wished to evade “political” topics during the “pastoral” event.
Despite all this, Pang, who is a member of the liturgy and youth commissions of the Hong Kong Diocese, is still hopeful. On his Facebook page, he writes, “Please continue to express concern on this issue [democracy in Hong Kong] and keep praying!”
Amen to that, Brother Pang!
