Arrested Development: Occupy Central founders turn themselves in, released an hour later with no charge

The three founders of pro-democracy civil disobedience group Occupy Central with Love and Peace (OCLP), Benny Tai, Chan Kin-man and Reverend Chu Yiu-Ming, announced rather dramatically this week that they were going to turn themselves into the police, asking the pro-democracy demonstrators to retreat.

Yesterday, the trio did indeed try to turn themselves in for illegal assembly at the Central Police Station, hugging friends and family before they entered the building. Other high-profile supporters, like Catholic Cardinal Joseph Zen, joined the trio in trying to get themselves arrested, reports TIME.

But, alas, they were released a mere hour later, with no charges nor arrests made.

“We are not being arrested,” confirmed Tai after leaving the station. But he said the police might still arrest him later on more serious charges.

Better luck next time!
