Microclimate: Kai Tak gets its own tiny weather station

Live in Kowloon City? Good for you, because you’re so important you’ve now got your very own weather station.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that’s because you’re blessed with a microclimate, though. It’s basically just for visitors to the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, who obviously need to know the exact temperature on the exact bit of ground they’re going to be on, exactly when they’re going to be on it.

The rather measly piece of kit, which could easily be mistaken for a bird house, will allow the public to get direct, district-based weather information either from the Hong Kong Observatory website (where weather information for the rest of Hong Kong can also be found), via a mobile version or by calling the “Dial-a-Weather” service on (+852) 187-8200.

The MyObservatory app will also start making use of the real-time temperature information from the Kai Tak station when releasing its updates, in case you were worried.

Lau Wai-wing, Chairman of the Kowloon City District Council, said at the unveiling today, “With the opening of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Kai Tak has become a tourist and leisure hotspot in the Kowloon City District. Many local residents and overseas travellers go there to take part in various recreational activities. The temperature information from the new weather station is very useful for them to learn about the latest weather conditions at Kai Tak.”

You can’t argue with the man’s logic.
