Hong Kong police to start arresting democracy protest leaders

Hong Kong police have started working to arrest at least 30 leaders of the pro-democracy protests, according to sources.

Although there is said to be a second list with 100 names of less prominent participants, those on the imminent hit list include Scholarism stud Joshua Wong, Hong Kong Federation of Students big hitters Alex Chow, Lester Shum and Eason Chung, and the old and the wise of Occupy Central with Love and Peace, Benny Tai, Reverend Chu Yiu-ming, and Chan Kin-man.

Also in the firing line is media tycoon Jimmy Lai, and several pro-democracy lawmakers you probably won’t have heard of.

A police source reportedly told the Standard that the men will be asked to attend a police station before being charged with organising unauthorised assemblies and released on bail.

Last night, Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen declined to comment while the cases are still being investigated, but ventured:

“I can only say that we will act in accordance with usual procedures, that is, all the relevant information and evidence will be presented to the Department of Justice. The department will decide according to the law and the code of prosecution.”
