Secretive new society training Hong Kong youngsters in Chinese values

A new and mysterious group set up to make Hong Kong youngsters more aware of their responsibilities as Chinese citizens has drawn suspicion after restricting media presence at its inauguration ceremony.

The Hong Kong Army Cadets Association, which was only registered as a non-profit organisation last Thursday, was inaugurated on Sunday at a restricted naval base on Stonecutters Island.

As if that’s not suspicious enough, the group seemingly has no phone number and no website, and… worst of all… boasts the wife of Hong Kong’s chief executive as its “commander-in-chief”!

Yep, Hong Kong’s first lady Regina Leung was reported to be at the ceremony – which saw a couple of hundred small people perform military-style drills in dark green uniforms – along with various top-ranking (and line-toeing) government officials.

Only a handful of media outlets, many of which were Chinese state newspapers and broadcasters, were invited to attend. Believe it or not, Coconuts HK was not one of them.

According to the SCMP, one of the group’s main objectives is to “encourage the youth in Hong Kong to be aware of their responsibilities and obligations as Chinese citizens”.

Anyone over the age of six can join. How you sign up though is anyone’s guess.
