Obey the beeps! Hong Kong police to clamp down on jaywalking over the next week

Are you a jaywalker? Of course you are. Ain’t nobody got time for the little green man, right?

You might want to be a bit cautious when crossing the road for the next week however, not because cars are dangerous, but because the police are embarking on a territory-wide clampdown on naughty pedestrians.

The safety campaign, which will apparently focus particularly on senior citizens (that’s right, pick on the oldies), will see “stringent enforcement action” employed, including verbal warnings (meh) and court summons (eek!).

Police Regional Road Safety Teams will also be distributing leaflets about common pedestrian offences, which include crossing within 15 metres of a footbridge or subway, disobeying light signals, and climbing over kerbside or central barriers.

Although getting picked up for any of these misdemeanours would be an absolute bitch, to be fair, the police have their hearts in the right place this time.

According to official figures, there were 3,268 pedestrian causalities from January to November last year. Of these, 58 accidents were fatal, 42 of which involved pedestrians over the age of 60.
